Here Comes the Sun

Morning has broken, at least it’s not cloudy!

At 11:00, Alfonso, our driver for the day, picked us up for the drive to Pompeii. I don’t know about you, but when I think of Pompeii I only think of the ruins, not that people actually live in the village of Pompeii, as Alfonso does. He was a nice guy and while not technically a tour guide, he has a lot of local knowledge that he loved to impart as he drove through the narrow windy streets of Sorrento. Italians talk with both hands, just picture it!

Pompeii is enormous, both in acreage and in size of buildings. It was started in the 6th – 7th century BCE and was destroyed in 79 AD. I am not sure but that makes it around 700 years old plus or minus a century before it was destroyed by Vesuvius. I cannot believe anyone could build this amazing place with the tools and technology available to them in only 500 years, assuming the Roman’s enjoyed it for a couple of centuries.

You may have picked up that QC took a tumble and bruised her face. You may not know she also bruised her foot pretty badly. She has been a brick traipsing around Italy for the past week but the stone pavers in Pompeii just about did her in.

After our tour of Pompeii Alfonso took us to a restaurant for lunch. It was basically a set menu starting with a glass of wine and a wonderful caprese salad. That was followed by a small pizza to share, then a bolognese and rum baba for dessert. I hate to do this to you all but here we go:

Legend has it the king of the region had a sweet tooth. His baker would make a different pastry for him each day. The king became angry when they weren’t sweet enough and threw it at the baker, the baker ducked and the pastry landed in the bowl of rum, creating the first rum baba and the baker was saved!

When we arrived in Naples we were both too tired to go out for dinner and still too full from our fabulous lunch. I did have to run to the ATM before we left for Paris tomorrow. Naples is beautiful and we are staying in the heart of the city on Via Toledo.

Tomorrow is our Air France flight to Paris and a dinner cruise on the Seine. Y’all come back now, ya’here?
